Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Football team fell to SCIAC rival CMS to start off their 2021 season 25-3 on Saturday night at Merritt Field.
The Sagehens started off with CMS in a non-conference showdown to start the year and will play again in the final game of the season for the conference Sixth Street Rivalry on November 13th at CMS
The Sagehens statistical leaders were Evan Flitz who threw for 144 yards off of 19-36 and one interception. Nathan Miles led the receivers with six catches for 54 yards and Garrett Pittman led the defense with two interceptions on the day in the loss.
Pomona-Pitzer opened up the game with a promising drive that saw them go eight plays and march down the field before a strip sack fumble turned the ball over to the Stags and set up the first points of the night from a field goal to give CMS a 3-0 lead.
The Sagehens got a turnover of their own as the CMS quarterback was picked off by Pittman who returned it down to the five yard line to set the Sagehens up for their first points of the night off of a field goal to tie the game at 3-3
The Sagehens couldn't find any more offense in the first half as the Stags capped off the first half with a field goal to take a 6-3 lead into the lock rooms.
CMS scored on its opening drive of the second half as they went 10 plays for 78 yards for the touchdown but missed the extra point to make the lead 12-3.
The Sagehens' offense stalled out in the second half on multiple occasions as they tried to chip away at the Stags' lead but the Pomona-Pitzer offense had no answers once they got into Stag territory. CMS continued to wear down the Sagehen defense as they marched down the field for another touchdown drive to take a 19-3 lead and as Pomona-Pitzer was making its final drive down the field, an interception returned 95 yards to cap off the night as the Sagehens fell to the Stags 25-3
