Pomona-Pitzer Drops Two In Pacific Coast Classic

CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Sagehens dropped their first match of the day 3-1 against Transylvania and their second match against UW Oshkosh. In the first game, Chloe Gill led the Sasgehens with 16 kills, swinging a .406 hitting percentage. Gill also led the attack against UW Oshkosh with 10 kills. 

 

Game One – Translvania 3, Pomona-Pitzer 1

The Sagehens started set one with an error but quick back and forth play saw Pomona-Pitzer knot things up at 5-5. Pomona-Pitzer then went on an 11-4 run to set the score at 16-10, utilizing kills from Naomi Chen-Mallouk, Chloe Gill, and Kylie Mies

Three errors and two kills would give the Pioneers their final five points of the set before Pomona-Pitzer would score nine-straight to take set one, capping things off with a service ace from Adrienne Tong

Set two played much like the first, featuring an early back and forth battle. The Pioneers took an early 3-1 lead but kills from Chloe Gill and Naomi Chen-Mallouk gave the Sagehens a slight 4-3 advantage. The two teams traded blows before Transylvania broke loose after having the game tied 12-12, recording two service aces and one kill to take a 15-12 lead.  

Pomona-Pitzer answered with two kills from Kellan Hayes and one from Chloe Gill to tie things once again at 15-15 but the Pioneers would go on a 10-4 run to even things at 1-1 in the match.

Transylvania came out swinging in set three, taking a 6-3 lead early and pushing it to 10-5 with a pair of service aces. The Sagehens tried to rally back with kills from Chloe Gill, Grace Fan, and Chloe Kerstein, setting the score at 16-11 but the Pioneers answered back with a 9-4 run to take a 2-1 lead. 

Pomona-Pitzer controlled the momentum in the early going of set four, utilizing three-straight kills from Gill, back-to-back service aces from Kellan Hayes, and kill from Naomi Chen-Mallouk to take a 7-2 lead over Transylvania. The Pioneers came right back, closing the gap to 10-9. The Sagehens continued to pressure, fighting their way to a 16-13 lead and eventually a 23-18 lead but the Pioneers put an end to Pomona-Pitzer's run, scoring six-straight to take a 24-23 lead. Kellan Hayes came through with a kill to tie it at 24-24 but two kills from the Pioneers would end the set 26-24 and give Transylvania the 3-1 victory. 

 

Game Two – UW Oshkosh 3, Pomona-Pitzer 1

The Sagehens fell behind early in set one, trailing the Titans 11-4. UW Oshkosh continued to attack, increasing their lead to 19-9 with an 8-5 run. Pomona-Pitzer would collect kills from Laurel Park and an error from the Titans to make it 19-11 but UW Oshkosh finished the set on a 6-4 run to take set one.  

Set two saw back and forth action between the two teams, tying the game nine times before Pomona-Pitzer recorded four-straight points to take a 14-10 lead. Pomona-Pitzer held onto their lead all the way to 20-17 but the Titans would go on an 8-1 run to end the second set. 

In set three, the Sagehens trailed 2-0 early, battled back to take a 5-4 lead before the Titans went on a 7-2 run to regain the lead at 11-7. Laurel Park and Paige Wilson added killed to bring Pomona-Pitzer within two. UW Oshkosh pushed ahead to 16-13 but Wilson and Chloe Gill would bring Pomona-Pitzer back within two at 17-15. Pomona-Pitzer picked up momentum late in the set after two service aces from the Titans and a kill from Kellan Hayes had the Sagehens tied at 23-23. The game came to a tie at 24-24 and 25-25 but two attacking errors from the Sagehens would end the set 27-25.

The Sagehens are back in action tomorrow with matches against George Fox (9:30 AM) and Augustana (2:00 PM)
