First Half Goals Lead Sagehens Over Bulldogs in Road Match

Box Score

REDLANDS, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer soccer team defeated the Bulldogs 2-1 for the second time this season. The Sagehens outshot the Bulldogs 26-6, putting 13 on frame. Pomona-Pitzer earned five corners while only allowing one from Redlands. Taylor Venenciano and Ciannah Correa each tallied a goal for Pomona-Pitzer to lift them past the Bulldogs. With the win, the Sagehens advance to 7-0-1 and will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Cal Lutheran at 2:00 p.m.

How It Happened

The Sagehens put on early pressure in the first half with Charlotte Tapp taking the first shot of the game just 2:22 in. Just 1:24 later, Emily Tomz sent the ball in off a corner, finding Hannah Mandell who took a shot, but the Redlands goalkeeper was there to make the save. In the ninth minute, Tomz took a rip her attempt was saved. Two minutes later Tomz sent in another corner. The corner got deflected out, but Spencer Duetz collected the ball and sent it back into the box. A Redlands defender attempted to head the ball out, but it got through and found the foot of Taylor Venenciano who took one touch before shooting it just past the keeper on the right side to give Pomona-Pitzer the 1-0 lead.

After controlling the run of play for much of the half, Ciannah Correa notched her second goal of the season in the 33rd minute to give the Sagehens a 2-0 lead. Amanda Khu earned an assist on the play after taking the ball into the box before sliding it to the center to Correa who took a strike off the pass, tucking it just inside the upper 90.

The Bulldogs responded just moments later with a goal of their own in the 38th minute, cutting the Sagehens lead to 2-1.

Pomona-Pitzer outshot Redlands 15-0 in the second half, putting seven on frame but none would find the cage by the final whistle, giving the Sagehens the 2-1 victory.
