CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 17 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team rolled past SCIAC opponent Caltech 21-7 in their first conference contest of the season on Wednesday night at Haldeman Pool.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-6 overall and now are 4-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Jack Ryan who had a career-high five goals in the win. Kyle Green, Max Bass and Andrew Plaschke also netted hat-tricks with three goals in the win while Zachary Kaplan scored twice and Jacob Cohn, Patrick Hughes, Timothy Mangan, Cole Kendrick and Luca Bozzo each scored once.
The Beavers stayed with the Sagehens early on and held the lead to start the game. Ryan, Green and Plashcke scored goals to keep Pomona-Pitzer even in the first quarter, but the Beavers scored late in the first to take a 4-3 lead heading into the second.
The Sagehens' offense came alive in the second quarter after outscoring Caltech 8-1. Kaplan and Kendrick scored to give the Sagehens the lead at 5-4 and Plaschke, Bass and Mangan grew the lead to 8-4 before the Beavers score their only goal of the second to cut the lead down to 8-5. The Sagehens continued their big scoring quarter as Kaplan, Green and Ryan all scored before halftime as the Sagehens took an 11-5 lead into the break.
Pomona-Pitzer netted five more goals in the third while they held Caltech to just one goal. Plashke, Ryan Green and Hughes all got on the board in the third to extend the lead to 16-6 heading into the fourth.
After having a big lead, the Sagehens still managed to outscore Caltech 5-1 in the fourth. Bozzo and Bass opened up the fourth with goals and after the Beavers sole goal of the fourth, the Sagehens ended the day with goals from Bass, Ryan and Cohn to cap off their home opener in style with the 14-point win over the Beavers.
