Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team suffered a heart-breaking loss at home 4-3 against No. 23 University of Redlands on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 5-2 overall and suffer their first SCIAC loss of the season.
The Sagehens were led by Alex Bonville who scored a brace with two goals in the loss. Kyle Lau scored the other goal for the Sagehens while Matthew Carlson chipped in with two assist and Jeffrey Tiglon had one.
The Sagehens played 88 minutes of great soccer as they looked for the big upset win over the ranked Bulldogs. Redlands got on the board first in the 23rd minute after the ball bounced around in the box and then was crossed in for a header just in front of goal to give Redlands a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens came back just before halftime with the game-tying goal as Tiglon crossed the ball across the field to find Bonville who took his time and curled it back the keeper to tie the game up at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The Sagehens took their first lead of the game just after coming back out of halftime in the 52nd minute. After a turnover by Redlands, the Sagehens found Lau in space who beat his defender and slotted it near post to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs came back to tie the game as they answered the Sagehens in the 56th minute after a long cross into the box was chested down and settled and shot into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
Pomona-Pitzer then answered again to reclaim the lead as Bonville found the back of the net for his second goal off of a goal from Carlson to give the Sagehens a one goal lead in the 63rd minute.
The Sagehens led with just under three minutes to play, but the Bulldogs kept sending men forward and crowded the box to look for a late equalizer. After a foul, the Bulldogs set up a set piece that found a man free on the back post that was touched in for the game-tying goal with two minutes remaining.
After trailing for the final 25 minutes of the second half, the Bulldogs tied the game and then scored the game-winning goal just over a minute later off of a deep cross into the box as Redlands escaped Pomona-Pitzer with a big comeback win.
