CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's soccer team earned their second SCIAC win in as many games after defeating the La Verne Leopards 4-1 with a brace from Matthew Carlson, a penalty kick from Kyle Lau and a goal from Jorge Guillen-Lopez. The Sagehens outshot La Verne 29-1, dominating possession for the entirety of the contest, keeping the Leopards out of the attacking third. Pomona-Pitzer will travel to Cal Tech for their next match on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 11:00 a.m.

Early Attack

The Leopards earned a corner just 31 seconds into the match, but it was the Sagehens with the first real opportunity in the 5th minute. Matthew Carlson sent in a perfect ball on a corner kick that found the feet of Jorge Guillen-Lopez. Guillen-Lopez sent the ball to the back of the net to give Pomona-Pitzer a 1-0 lead. The 1-0 lead would hold through for the remainder of the first half despite the Sagehens adding 13 more shots to the box score.

Pouring It On

Just like the first half, the Sagehens didn't waste any time to get on the board in the second half. After a Leopards handball in the box 1:09 into the half, Kyle Lau stepped up to take the penalty kick and didn't disappoint, doubling the Sagehens lead to 2-0. 

La Verne answered back in the 53rd minute after Christian Rios sent in a cross from the end line that found to foot of Jacob Corona to cut Pomona-Pitzer's lead to 2-1.

Pomona-Pitzer controlled possession the rest of the way through, keeping their foot on the gas pedal until the final whistle. In the 70th minute, Jorge Guillen-Lopez returned the favor to Matthew Carlson, who beat the goalkeeper near post to increase the Sagehens lead to 3-1. Just over 10 minutes later it was Shagan Bhullar slotting the ball to Carlson who took a touch around his defender before shooting across the goal with his right to make it 4-1 in the 82nd minute.
