Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team fell to the CMS Athenas 64-55, shotting 3-9 from downtown and 21-65 from the field. Kayla Hankins led the team with 12 points and nine rebounds while Maison Yee recorded 10 points on the night. Both Madison Quan and Charlize Andaya recorded nine points. The Sagehens picked up 28 points from the bench and had 10 steals on the night. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 8 when they host the Chapman Panthers at 7:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The two teams traded buckets quickly with the Athenas hitting a three before Amara Chidom made a layup, but the Athenas went on a 12-0 run to take a 15-2 lead over the Sagehens. Maison Yee hit a jumper to bring the run to an end, but CMS charged forward with then next five points to take a 20-4 lead with 2:19 left in the first quarter. Chidom and Alysha Maile Yamada both made buckets to cut the Athenas lead down to 24-9 at the end of the first quarter.
The Sagehens began to chip away at the deficit in the second quarter after Vanessa Hsia made a jumper and a layup to cut the lead to 28-13 with 6:24 left in the half. Emily Church capitalized on a three-point play after getting fouled on her layup and making the free throw. Amara Chidom made another layup 26 seconds later before Madison Quan hit a jumper to pull the Sagehens within 10 at 30-20 with 2:53 left to play in the half. CMS ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 38-20 lead heading into the halftime break.
The third quarter saw Pomona-Pitzer outscore the Athenas 17-10 to set the score at 48-37 heading into the fourth quarter. CMS recorded the first six points of the third quarter, but Kayla Hankins brought the 6-0 run to an end with an offensive rebound and a quick layup. Charlize Andaya followed the play with a three-pointer before Hankins recorded six-straight points. Maison Yee hit a three-pointer to put the Sagehens within 11 at 46-35. The Athenas responded with a layup with 41 seconds left in the quarter, but Madison Quan recorded one of her own to put the Sagehens back within 11 at 48-37 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Sagehens pulled within 10 with 5:30 to play in regulation with the score set at 54-44. Minutes later, the Sagehens closed the gap to eight points after a layup from Madison Quan with 1:50 to play in the quarter. The Athenas added another bucket to make it 60-50 but two Quan free throws had the Sagehens bad within eight at 60-52 with 46 seconds left. The Athenas once again made their way back to a 10-point lead, but Charlize Andaya cut it to nine with a three-pointer with 18 seconds left. CMS played out the rest of the clock to secure the 64-55 victory over the Sagehens.
