Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team punched its ticket to the SCIAC Tournament Championship with a 2-1 win over Occidental on Thursday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 14-1-2 and advance to the SCIAC Tournament Championship for the fifth time in the past six seasons and will face the winner of Chapman and Cal Lutheran.
Pomona-Pitzer had two different goal scorers as Eliana Prosnitz and Kelsey Shintaku both found the back of the net in the win.
How It Happened
Although the Sagehens are known for coming out and dominating possession early in the game, it was the Tigers who showed a lot of fight in the first half. Occidental weathered the Sagehens' offense in the first half and got a chance at the end of the first half. After a clearance from the Sagehens' backline, the Tigers converted a corner with less than a minute left to go in the first half and held a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
With the Sagehens down one at halftime, Pomona-Pitzer immediately flipped the script in the second half and scored the equalizer within the first two minutes of the second half. Prosnitz got the Sagehens going as she ripped a banger from outside the box to beat the keeper and reignite the Sagehens with a 1-1 scoreline in the 47th minute.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to net the game-winner just under 10 minutes later with a crafty set piece. Shintaku initially fakes the free-kick while Anna Ponzio then finds Shintaku making a run down the right side of the box and a flick of the foot beats the keeper far side to give the Sagehens. 2-1 lead in the 56th minute.
After taking the lead, the Sagehens did what they do best and controlled the ball for the remainder of the second half and prevented the Tigers from sending the game to overtime as they punched their ticket to the SCIAC Postseason Championship.
Up Next: The Sagehens will await the winner of No. 3 Chapman at No. 2 Cal Lutheran but will play the contest on Saturday, November 6th at 12:00 p.m.
