Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball team defeated George Fox 75-69 to advance to 2-2 on the season. Madison Quan led the team with 23 points and five assists while Kaitlyn Leung added 20 points off the bench with four steals. The Sagehens shot 41.5% from the field (27-65) and 34.8% from downtown (8-23). Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 26 when they take on Whitworth in the David Wells Classic at 1:30 PM.
How It Happened
The Sagehens recorded the first bucket of the game with a jump shot from Allison Murphy just under two minutes into the quarter. Charlize Andaya earned the next two points to give the Sagehens a 4-0 up until a made free throw from the Bruins with 6:46 left in the quarter. Pomona-Pitzer extended their lead to 9-1 with another Murphy jumper and a Kaitlyn Leung three-pointer. The Bruins began to battle back after a three-pointer cut the lead to 9-4 but the Sagehens continued to attack, going on an 11-8 run to take a 20-12 lead with 2:07 remaining in the first quarter. The Bruins pulled within three at 20-17 but Emily Church hit a jumper to extend the lead to 22-17 heading into the second quarter.
The Sagehens dominated the second quarter, starting out on an 11-0 run to take a 33-17 lead with 6:01 left before the half. George Fox finally recorded their first points of the quarter with a layup, but the Sagehens answered right back with a Maison Yee three-pointer. The second half of the period saw Pomona-Pitzer pick up 10 more points while the Bruins earned nine of their own, sending the Sagehens into the halftime break with a 43-28 lead.
Out of the break, Pomona-Pitzer recorded the first three buckets to take a 49-28 lead, their largest of the night. Over the remaining 7:16 of the third quarter, the Bruins took the Sagehens led from 21 points down to 11 points heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bruins came out strong in the fourth, chipping away at the Sagehens lead before tying the game at 61-61 with 5:36 left to play in the quarter. Kaitlyn Leung regained the lead for Pomona-Pitzer with a three but four-straight buckets for the Bruins gave them a 69-64 lead. With the pressure on, Madison Quan was at the free throw line and made her first one but missed her second. Quan picked up the offensive rebound and quickly dropped it in for two more points to pull the team within two at 69-67 with 1:41 on the clock. Quan tied it up 33 seconds later with another layup to force a George Fox timeout. Out of the break the Bruins turned it over, leading to a Kaitlyn Leung three-pointer that put the Sagehens ahead 72-69, just about ending the game. The Bruins failed to capitalize on any of their opportunities, including a good look from downtown but the Sagehens pushed past them in the homestretch to earn a 75-69 victory.
