How It Happened

CMS came out swinging, starting set one on a 10-1 run. The Sagehens forced two CMS attacking errors while getting kills from Laurel Park and Chloe Gill, cutting the Athena lead to 11-5. Pomona-Pitzer continued to battle back into the set as Kylie Mies, Paige Wilson, and Chloe Gill all recorded kills, cutting the CMS lead to 16-15, forcing them to talk things over. Out of the break, the Athenas pushed to a 23-20 lead, but the Sagehens went on a 4-0 run to take a 24-23 lead. The run forced another CMS timeout to regroup, and they responded with back-to-back points to take a 25-24 lead. The Sagehens picked up a kill from Grace Fan to tie things at 25-25 but CMS answered with a kill of their own to regain the lead at 26-25. After a service error on the Athenas had set one tied 26-26, CMS earned back-to-back kills to take set one 28-26.

The beginning of set two featured a much closer score as the two teams worked to a 3-3 tie but CMS pulled away again, this time taking a commanding 17-5 lead. The Sagehens called a timeout which resulted in a service error by the Athenas out of the break, but CMS added another four points to take a 21-6 lead. The Sagehens started a late rally, earning seven of the next eight points to cut the lead to 22-13 but CMS picked up two kills and forced an attack error to take set two 25-15.

The Athenas got out to another large lead to start the set, going on an 8-0 run before Chloe Gill and Gaby Harrison each chimed in for a kill to get the Sagehens on the board. CMS continued to increase their lead, working to a 16-6 advantage before Pomona-Pitzer went on a 5-0 run with two service aces from Adrienne Tong and two kills from Grace Fan, cutting the Athena lead to 16-11. The Athenas answered back with a 9-3 to take the set 25-14 and earn the 3-0 victory over the Sagehens.
