How It Happened
The Athenas had the first opportunity of the game after a 4th minute shot struck the crossbar. CMS earned a corner 23 seconds after the shot but couldn't create another opportunity out of it.
Just under a minute later it was Charlotte Tapp pressuring the CMS goalkeeper with a shot on frame. CMS recorded the next three shots with Taylor Kane saving the only attempt that was on goal. Pomona-Pitzer responded with three-straight shots of their own with Anna Ponzio, Emily Tomz, and Charlotte Tapp all making attempts. The pace of the game slowed down as each team would only record one more shot in the half, ending the first 45 minutes at 0-0.
In the second half, the Sagehens controlled the run of play, seeing a shot on goal from Emily Tomz 6:01 into the half. Just over a minute later, Hannah Mandell made a perfect pass to Ciannah Correa who beat the goalkeeper to the right and drilled the shot, giving the Sagehens a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute.
In the 71st minute, the Athenas put the pressure on with a shot that went just wide before putting one on goal in the 72nd minute. Naomi Meurice was there to make the save to keep CMS off the board. From there, the Sagehens outshot the Athenas 7-2 the rest of the way, holding possession in the attack third as time ran out, giving the Sagehens the 1-0 victory of their rival.
