Sagehens Fall To Panthers 27-14

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team fell to Chapman 27-14 on Saturday night at Merritt Field.

Before the game, the Sagehens celebrated senior night to honor its seniors who are playing in their last game at home this season.

The Sagehens were led by Evan Flitz who went 25-55 in the air with 252 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.  The Sagehens only had six rushes on the day, all by Flitz for 15 yards while Will Radice led the receivers with five catches for 62 yards.

The defense played well for the Sagehens despite giving up the 27 points.  The defense forced five turnovers with three interceptions and two fumbles.  Garrett Pittman had himself a night with two picks, one retuned for a touchdown, and Briggs Garrison also had an interception.

The Sagehens started off the game with a big, forced fumble that gave the offense good field position to start their game. The Sagehens took advantage as Flitz and Cole Barry connected for a 27-yard touchdown to give the Sagehens a 7-0 lead in the early stages of the first quarter.

Chapman then drove the length of the field, but Pittman came up with a big interception in the endzone to prevent the Panthers from getting any points. After a Sagehen three and out, the Panthers finally got their first points of the game after a 12-play drive evened the score at 7-7 to end the first quarter.

The Panthers went on to take the lead in the second quarter after a goal line rush to take a 14-7 lead but both defenses came up big in the second quarter as a total of four turnovers and two turnovers on downs were committed in the second quarter alone as the Sagehens went into halftime with a 14-7 lead.

The Sagehens offense was shut down in the second half of the game, but the defense stepped up with a pick six from Pittman from 34 yards out to tie the game at 14-14 early on in the third quarter.

After the Sagehens tied the game, the Panthers went on another long drive that ended in a touchdown after 12 plays to reclaim the lead at 21-14. After a Sagehen punt, the Panthers ended another drive with three points as they ended the third quarter with a 10-point lead at 24-14 entering the fourth.

Pomona-Pitzer had a chance to cut the lead down to a one possession game, but a missed field goal gave the ball back to the Panthers who added a field goal of their own and put the game out of reach at 27-14 with 4:46 left to play.

Up Next: The Sagehens will go on the road to face La Verne on Saturday, November 6th at 5:00 p.m.
