CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team defeated the La Verne Leopards 19-4 with 12 different goal scorers. The attack was led by Dylan Elliott who earned four goals while Jack Mallery and Benjamin Sasaki each picked up hat tricks. On the night, the Sagehens outshot La Verne 39-22, recording a .487 shooting percentage overall. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 30th at 11:00 a.m. with a Sixth Street Rivalry against the Stags.
How It Happened
The Leopards were the first to get on the board, finding the net just under three minutes into the contest. Benjamin Sasaki evened the score at 1-1 which sparked the Sagehens offense as they earned four of the next five goals to take a 5-2 lead at the end of the first period.
The Sagehens outscored the Leopards 7-1 in the second period, picking up goals from Dylan Elliott, Jack Mallery, Benjamin Sasaki, and Adam Gross.
Out of the halftime break, the Sagehens added four goals to the scoreboard with Elliott striking the net 2:04 into the period. Just 26 seconds after Elliott's goal, Matija Jancic capitlzied on a 5m opportunity. The Sagehens third goal of the period came off the hand of Alexander Peterson who scored with 2:46 remaining in the period to give Pomona-Pitzer the 15-3 lead. With 40 seconds remaining in the period, Keegan Coleman picked up his only goal of the net to make it 16-3 at the end of the third period.
La Verne earned a goal just under two minutes into the fourth period, but the Sagehens recorded the next three with goals from Patrick Hughes, Cole Kendrick, and Jack Ryan. The three late goals capped off the Sagehens the 19-4 victory over La Verne, pushing them to 18-7 overall and 10-0 in the conference.
