Ponzio's Brace Leads Sagehens Past Tigers, 4-1

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team ended their regular season road schedule with a 4-1 win over SCIAC opponent Occidental on Saturday evening at Jack Kemp Stadium.

With the win, the Sagehens win their fourth-straight contest and move to 12-1-2 overall and 8-1-2 in SCIAC play.

How it Happened

The Sagehens have been on a scoring frenzy as they have now netted 10 goals in their last three games.  Pomona-Pitzer was led by Anna Ponzio who scored a brace with two goals and an assist in the win. Helena Robinowitz and Ciannah Correa also netted goals for the Sagehens while goalkeeper Naomi Meurice got the win with two saves.

Pomona-Pitzer didn't waste any time getting out to a 1-0 lead as they notched their first goal in the 7th minute of the match. Correa played in a low cross that was taken by Robinowitz first time and placed over the keeper's head to give the Sagehens an early lead.

The Sagehens doubled up their goals just over six minutes later as Robinowitz was on the assisting end this time as she found Ponzio in the box who then took a touch to her left and beat the keeper near post for her first goal of the night and put the Sagehens up 2-0 in the 13th minute.

After being up two goals in the first half, the Sagehens would surrender their first goal in three matches after a penalty in the box gave the Tigers a penalty shot that they converted to cut the lead down to 2-1 heading into halftime.

With Occidental in striking distance, the Sagehens came out in the second half and immediately put two more goals on the board.  In the 50th minute, the Sagehens took a two-goal lead as the defense took advantage of a turnover and Correa beat the keeper to extend the lead to 3-1.  Just over a minute later, the Sagehens struck again as Ponzio finished off her brace with a backline lob from Caitlyn Pham that fell to the feet of Ponzio who then beat the keeper in the upper 90 to cap of a big road win for the Sagehens.

Up Next: The Sagehens will finish off their regular season schedule as they host La Verne on Saturday, October 30th at 11:00 a.m.
