Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer soccer team defeated the CMS Athenas 4-0 with goals from Mandell, Prosnitz, and Correa. With the victory, the Sagehens are now 11-1-2 on the season and 7-1-2 in the conference with matches against Occidental and La Verne on the horizon. Pomona-Pitzer utilized a heavy attack in the contest, outshooting CMS 26-4 while earning five corner kicks. The Sagehens will be back in action on Oct. 23 when they travel to Occidental at 4:00 p.m. Pomona-Pitzer's last regular season matchup is on Saturday, Oct. 30 when they host the La Verne Leopards.
How It Happened
The Sagehens had early chances in the first half after Emily Tomz took a shot the just went wide 40 seconds into the match. Nine seconds later, Pomona-Pitzer earned their first corner kick of the day but couldn't capitalize on the opportunity. The Sagehens most dangerous early chance was in the 3rd minute when Anna Ponzio ripped a shot that appeared to be on its way in but just narrowly hit the post and bounced away. Just over a minute later, CMS had their most dangerous moment of the game as they put a shot on frame that was saved by Sagehens goalkeeper Taylor Kane.
After five shots in the opening minutes of the contest, the Sagehens broke through in the 12th minute off a tap-in shot from Hannah Mandell. Spencer Duetz sent the ball over with her ball getting deflected by the keeper, but Mandell adjusted and sent it home to give Pomona-Pitzer the 1-0 lead.
In the 30th minute, it was Hannah Mandell again in a similar situation as Amanda Khu sent the ball across the middle of the box with it getting deflected once more. Mandell did just as she did before and poked this one to the back of the net, earning her second goal of the game to make it 2-0.
The Sagehens took four more shots before Amanda Khu found herself inside the box with the ball at her foot. Khu held off her defender and slotted the ball to Eliana Prosnitz who cashed in on a rip from 10 yards out to extend the Sagehens lead to 3-0 in the 40th minute.
Out of the halftime break, the Sagehens began to pressure the Athenas again. In the 52nd minute, Hannah Mandell found Ciannah Correa just inside the box and Correa sent a shot into the left post and gave the Sagehens a 4-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer recorded 10 more shots in the half with the most dangerous ones coming off the foot of Anna Ponzio and Amanda Khu. In the 69th minute, Anna Ponzio found the post for the second time of the day after sending in a beautiful shot that ricocheted just of the cage. In the 82nd minute, Amanda Khu ripped a shot that had the keeper beat but smacked off the left post.
Overall, the Sagehens put 18 of their 26 shots on frame while holding CMS to just two shots on goal. The Pomona-Pitzer goalkeepers Taylor Kane and Naomi Meurice split time between the pipes with Taylor Kane recording two saves in the first half.
