REDLANDS, CA. – The No.16 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team left Redlands with a 12-9 win on Wednesday night at the Thompson Aquatic Center.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 16-7 overall and stay perfect in the SCIAC at 8-0 on the year.
The Sagehens were led by Adam Gross who had a big night with four goals in the win. Sam Sasaki also registered a hat-trick with three goals while Dylan Elliott had two and Kyle Green, Ben Sasaki and Noah Sasaki each chipped in with one.
Kellen Grant and William Byrne split time in goal against the Bulldogs while Byrne stopped three shots and Grant came away with five saves and one steal.
The Sagehens wasted no time building themselves a lead in the first quarter as they jumped out to. 4-1 advantage early on. Elliott started out with a goal, and after a goal by the Bulldogs, the Sagehens added three more from Sam Sasaki, and back-to-back goals from Gross to take a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
The Sagehens extended their lead to 5-1 to start the second as Sam Sasaki got his second goal of the game and Ben Sasaki followed after a Redlands goal to make the lead 6-2 with 5:18 left in the first half. Each team netted two more goals in the second as Gross and Elliott notched goals to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.
Both teams came out in the second half and netted three goals in the third quarter. Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer traded goals in the third as Sam Sasaki, Green and Noah Sasaki all notched goals to move the score to 11-7 heading into fourth quarter.
Riding a four-goal lead, the Sagehens settled in took some time off of the clock. Redlands outscored the Sagehens in the fourth 2-1 but the lone goal from Gross was enough to hold off the Bulldogs for the 12-9 win.
