Sagehens Soar Past Beavers in Road Sweep

PASADENA, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team defeated Caltech 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-17), earning the sweep for the second day in a row. The Sagehens attack was led by Chloe Gill who recorded 13 kills with a .258 clip. Lauren Asato led the defense with 18 digs on the day. Pomona-Pitzer is now 8-7 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7:00 p.m. when they take on Redlands.

How It Happened

The Beavers took the first two points of set one before Pomona-Pitzer went on a 5-0 run with kills from Chloe Gill, Naomi Chen-Mallouk, and Kellan Hayes. The two teams traded points briefly, working to a 6-6 tie and 8-8 tie but Pomona-Pitzer went on another 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead and force a Caltech timeout. The run featured a Paige Wilson kill and back-to-back service aces from Kellan Hayes. The Sagehens would allow the Beavers four more points before pouring it on with kills from Laurel Park, Naomi Chen-Mallouk, and Chloe Gill to take set one 25-12. 

The Sagehens didn't slow down going into the second set, starting things off with a 7-0 run with kills from Gill and Chen-Mallouk. The two teams traded blows with the Beavers taking four of the next seven points with the score at 9-4 but Pomona-Pitzer continued to pressure, going on an 8-0 run to take a 17-4 lead. The Beavers would record seven more points in the set with the Sagehens attack not slowing down, picking up kills from Paige Wilson, Cameron Hodges, and Naomi Chen-Mallouk to take set two 25-11. 

Pomona-Pitzer started set three on a 9-3 run with Lauren Asato and Kylie Mies each earning a service ace. Caltech responded with a 3-0 run, but Chloe Gill put an end to things with a kill set up by Kylie Mies. The Sagehens and Beavers went back and forth momentarily, working to a 11-8 score, but the Sagehens regained momentum and went on an 8-3 run to extend their lead to 19-11. The run featured kills from Chloe Kerstein, Grace Fan, and Chloe Gill. Caltech responded with a quick 4-0 run to cut the Sagehens lead to 19-15, forcing Pomona-Pitzer to talk things over with a timeout. Out of the break, Caltech kept things interesting by pulling within three at 20-17 but two attack errors along with kills from Grace Fan, Paige Wilson and Chloe Gill ended the set 25-17, completing the Sagehens sweep for the second game in a row.
