Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer soccer team defeated Whittier 2-0 with first half goals from Anna Ponzio and Amanda Khu. Overall, the Sagehens outshot the Poets 17-0. Pomona-Pitzer is now 9-1-2 on the season and 5-1-2 in the conference. The Sagehens will back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 11:00 a.m. against the Chapman Panthers.
How It Happened
The Sagehens didn't take long to get on the board after a Whittier handball in the box in the sixth minute put Anna Ponzio on the ball for a penalty kick. Ponzio delivered with a clean strike to give the Sagehens the early 1-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer dominated possession and maintained heavy pressure, recording eight more shots before earning their next goal. In the 38th minute, Maya Nitschke-Alonso passed the ball to Amanda Khu who floated the ball over the keeper into the back of the net to double the Sagehens lead to 2-0.
Pomona-Pitzer continued to hold possession well in the second half while recording seven shots. The Sagehens most dangerous opportunity came in the 54th minute after Helena Robinowitz ripped a shot just off the post.
As mentioned, the Sagehens outshot the Poets 17-0 while earning six corners with three in each half.
