Box Score WHITTIER, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's soccer team defeated the Whittier Poets 1-0 on the road thanks to a 58th minute goal off the foot of Alex Bonville. The Poets narrowly outshot the Sagehens 18-16 while Pomona-Pitzer earned a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Ethan Bae made 12 saves on the night with four in the first half and eight in the second. The Sagehens are now 6-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference and will take on Caltech on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. as the team celebrates senior day.
How It Happened
The Poets put the pressure on early in the contest with shots on goal in the 4th minute and 9th minute but Ethan Bae was there to make the saves.
In the 12 minute, Brendan Kish put a shot on goal of his own, but the game remained scoreless as the Poets goalkeeper made the save. The Sagehens would go on to put three more shots on goal to the Poets two shots on goal but neither team found success as both keepers kept the score at 0-0.
In the second half, it was Pomona-Pitzer putting the pressure on first, recording two corners and three shots in the opening 10 minutes of the half. Shortly after a quick counter from the Poets, the Sagehens broke through. In the 58th minute, Alex Bonville found the back of the net to give Pomona-Pitzer the 1-0 lead. The Sagehens were able to get off another six shots before the end of the game but not without dangerous opportunities from the Poets in the closing minutes of the contest. With just under 3:30 on the clock, Whittier was able to record four goals putting three on frame, but Ethan Bae sealed the win for the Sagehens, making each save to keep the Poets off the board.
