Box Score CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer volleyball team swept the California Lutheran Regals after coming from behind to take set one 26-24 before earning 25-16 and 25-21 victories in set two and three. The Sagehens were led by Paige Wilson on the attack as she recorded 14 kills while also picking up 13 digs. Adrienne Tong and Kylie Mies dished out 15 and 14 assists, respectively. Grace Fan picked up two solo blocks and two block assists, The Sagehens defense was led by libero Lauren Asato who recorded 22 digs, making some phenomenal saves in the back court to keep numerous plays alive. Pomona-Pitzer will waste no time getting back on the court as they travel to Caltech tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.
How It Happened
The Regals took the early advantage in set one with a 5-2 run, but Pomona-Pitzer answered with a 4-1 charge to take the lead at 6-5. After three attacking errors on the Sagehens, the Regals held an 8-6 lead, but Pomona-Pitzer went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-10 lead. The run featured two service aces from Kellan Hayes as well as on from Adrienne Tong. The Regals used a 14-6 run to take a dangerous 24-20 lead but the Sagehens had a different plan. Naomi Chen-Mallouk recorded back-to-back kills before two attack errors on the Regals tied the set at 24-24. The Sagehens regained the lead at 25-24 after a Chloe Gill kill before Chen-Mallouk finished this one off with another kill, giving the Sagehens a 26-24 victory in set one.
Pomona-Pitzer started set two with a service ace from Kellan Hayes, but California Lutheran put the pressure on and used a 5-2 run to take the lead at 5-3. The Regals continued to hold off the Sagehens, working to an 8-6 lead but the Sagehens picked up two kills from Grace Fan, a Regals attack error, and an Adrienne Tong service ace to regain the lead at 10-8. The Regals quickly answered, tying the game at 11-11. Pomona-Pitzer proceeded to surge past the Regals, going on a massive 14-3 run to end the set 25-14. The run saw kills from Grace Fan, Chloe Gill, Naomi Chen-Mallouk, Kellan Hayes, and Paige Wilson.
Set three started with a kill from Fan and one from Chen-Mallouk but the Regals picked up the next six points to take a 6-2 lead. Back-and-forth play favored California Lutheran with Pomona-Pitzer trailing 17-12 in the set. The Sagehens then stormed back into the game with six-straight points with kills from Chloe Gill and Paige Wilson, giving Pomona-Pitzer an 18-17 lead. The game came to a tie at 19-19 before the Sagehens scored six of the next eight points to take the 25-21 set victory, sweeping the Regals 3-0. In the final run, Paige Wilson picked up four kills with Naomi Chen-Mallouk ending the set with a kill for the second time of the night.
