Sagehens Fall Short In SCIAC Semifinals At Redlands, 53-51

REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team came up just short in the Semifinals of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament with a 53-51 loss to Redlands on Thursday night at Currier Gym.

With the loss, the Sagehens end the season at 15-11 overall and 10-6 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by junior Renae Tamura who led the way with 14 points in the loss. Sophomore Madison Quan added 13 points and six rebounds while sophomore Vanessa Hsia chipped In with eight points off of the bench.

The Sagehens had the hot hands early on in the first quarter as they quickly jumped out to a 7-4 lead after a Hsia jump shot at the midway point in the first quarter. The Bulldogs picked up their offense late in the first and outscored the Sagehens 14-6 to end the first on top 18-13. 

Redlands got their lead to seven points early in the second quarter, their largest lead of the first half, before the Sagehens began to chip away at the deficit. Pomona-Pitzer got the lead down to just two points after a Quan layup brought the score to 20-18 with 6:35 left in the first half.

Redlands responded by widening the gap back up to seven points at 27-22 but the Sagehens were able to cut the lead down towards the end of the half. The Sagehens made just one three in the first half but it came at a big moment as sophomore Cameron Edward hit a step back three to bring the Sagehens back to within three points at 28-25 heading into halftime. 

After a close first half, the third quarter started with the Sagehens tying the game at 28-28 after a quick jumper by Tamura. Redlands responded and scored off of a breakaway layup but the Sagehens responded with a three from Quan to take their first lead of the second half at 31-30.  The Sagehens went on to hit another big three from Edward and held a 34-32 lead at the midway point media timeout. The third quarter ended with a big four-point swing for Redlands. At the end of the third, the Bulldogs scored the last bucket and at the beginning of the fourth Redlands scored the opening basket of the quarter to take a 42-38 lead.  

Quan came back for the Sagehens and scored four of her own points and after a pick pocket and breakaway layup tied the game at 42-42 with 8:17 to go. Redlands held a small lead for the entire fourth quarter but the Sagehens had a chance to tie or take the lead late in the game. After Redlands failed to close the game out at the line, the Sagehens had an opportunity down 53-51 with 22 seconds left to play.  Pomona-Pitzer got a shot off by Quan with seconds remaining but the shot missed off of the side of the rim as the Bulldogs survived the SCIAC Semifinals against the Sagehens.
