Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team bounced back with an 81-55 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne on Wednesday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by sophomores Madison Quan and Carly Leong who each tallied 17 points in the win. Sophomore Amara Chidom tallied a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds and junior Renae Tamura chipped in with 10 points.
The Sagehens held the Leopards to just 22.4% from the floor and only 13.8% from three. Although the Sagehens shot just 39.4% from the floor, Pomona-Pitzer hit on 42.3% from its three-point attempts and outscored the Leopards 26-22 inside the paint.
La Verne controlled the game early on in the first quarter with its offense clicking to take an 11-5 lead midway through the first quarter. The Sagehens trailed for the entire first quarter against the Leopards but took their first lead of the game with 26 seconds remaining after a three-point shot by Quan to give the Sagehens a 20-18 lead heading into the second.
The Sagehens took over in the second quarter as they outscored La Verne 21-9. Quan picked up right where she left off in the second with an opening three-pointer to extend the lead to 23-18 and the Sagehens stretched their lead to over 10 points at 33-22 with 3:05 left to play in the half. Pomona-Pitzer continued to extend the lead throughout the second quarter and held a 41-27 lead heading into halftime.
The Sagehens stayed on top in the third quarter as they continued to force the Leopards into bad shots on offense and maintained their level of play throughout the third. La Verne shot 28% in the third quarter and missed all six of their three-point attempts while Quan led the Sagehens with eight points in the third to widen the gap to 62-41 heading into the fourth.
After taking a large lead heading into the fourth, the Sagehens controlled the clock in the fourth quarter to preserve their large lead over the Leopards. Pomona-Pitzer still managed to outscore the Leopards 19-14 in the fourth and took their largest lead of the night at 31 points with 2:21 left to play after first-year Sophie Adler nailed a three-pointer to give the Sagehens a 79-48 lead.
The Sagehens successfully ran out the clock and bounced back with a big SCIAC win over La Verne.
