Box Score WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier College 66-52 on Wednesday night at the Graham Athletic Center.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Madison Quan who had a team-high 14 points in the loss. Two other Sagehens reached double-digit scoring with sophomore Carly Leong with 13 and Renae Tamura with 10.
The Sagehens had a tough night shooting from the field at 26.5% from the floor to the Poets 42.1%. Whittier outrebounded the Sagehens 44-29 and had 24 points inside the paint while the Sagehens only scored on eight points down low.
Pomona-Pitzer got out to a blazing fast start to begin the game and took a 14-6 lead after back-to-back three-pointers by Leong. The Sagehens stretched the lead to as large as 14 points after Quan hit a three to extend the lead to 20-6 with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Whittier hit some shots late in the period but the Sagehens ended the first up 21-11 after a 13-point quarter from Leong.
The big lead didn't last long as the Poets came out in the second quarter and immediately erased the deficit. Whittier started the second on a 13-1 run and took the lead at 24-22 with 6:32 left before halftime. The Sagehens regrouped and reclaimed the lead to end the first half 33-29 heading into the locker room.
The Sagehens came out and maintained their lead over the Poets in a crucial third quarter of action. Whittier couldn't chip away at the Sagehens' lead but Pomona-Pitzer couldn't extend its lead as the two teams each tallied 13 points in the third with the Sagehens holding onto a 46-42 lead heading into the fourth.
Whittier started out the fourth with a run to take back the lead at 52-50 with 5:44 left in the game. Whittier went on to score seven-straight points while holding the Sagehens coreless for the next 3:44 and held a 59-50 lead with two minutes left to play. Pomona-Pitzer tried to make a late comeback but couldn't get a clutch three to fall as Whittier held on for the win at home.
