Men's Water Polo: No. 19 Sagehens Split Day 1 Of Triton Tournament

SAN DIEGO, CA. – The No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team split day one of the Triton Tournament with a 13-7 loss to No. 7 Pepperdine and a 12-7 win against Concordia on Saturday afternoon.

Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens opened up the year 1-1 overall.

Pepperdine 13, Pomona-Pitzer 7

The Sagehens were led by Benjamin Sasaki who tallied two goals in the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer started out the first period on top as Sasaki notched the first goal of the game to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead. The Waves ended the first period with a goal with just over two minutes left to tie the game at 1-1 and went on to take their first lead of the game with a goal in the second. Pomona-Pitzer evened the score just before half as Adam Gross scored with 24 second left to head into halftime tied at 2-2.

Pepperdine had the advantage in the second half as they outscored the Sagehens 10-5.  The Waves came out with back-to-back goals to open up the second half before the Sagehens got on the board with a goal from Sam Sasaki with 1:34 left in the third to cut the lead down to 4-3.  The Waves ended the third with a late goal to extend the lead to 5-3 heading into the fourth.

The offense opened up for both teams in the fourth as a total of 11 goals were scored between the Sagehens and the Waves.  Ben Sasaki opened up the fourth with his second goal of the game, but the Waves' offense took off as they scored seven goals in the half and held off the Sagehens, 12-7.

Pomona-Pitzer 12, Concordia 9

The Sagehens had four players who shared a team-high two goals each as Sam Gorcey-Biblowitz, Joseph Schafer, Gross and Dylan Elliott all netted two goals in the win.  James Kelbert earned the win for the Sagehens with five saves in goal.

 The Sagehens got out to a quick start in the first as Tony Murphy, Elliott and Zach Senator all found the back of the net to take a 3-1 lead. The Eagles had a big second period as they outscored the Sagehens 4-1 and took a 5-4 lead heading into halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer responded with a big second half as they outscored the Eagles 8-4.  The Sagehens put up four goals in the third with goals from Gorcey-Biblowitz, Jacob Cohn, Schafer and Gross and four more goals in the fourth as they capped off day one of the Triton Tournament with a win.
