Box Score PASADENA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball Team got back on the winning track after defeating Caltech on the road 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-10) on Friday night. The Sagehens had a solid game above the net and on the floor, hitting with a .211 kill percentage as a team and making 78 total digs. They held the Beavers to a .095 kill percentage, including a -.051 in the final set. Naomi Chen-Mallouk led the team with 18 kills while Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong had eight kills with three solo blocks and one assisted block. Lauren Asato had 24 digs and Adrienne Tong had 39 assists.
Season Impact: The Sagehens are now 7-7 overall and 1-3 in the SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer got off to a quick start, jumping to a 4-0 lead thanks to two kills by Chen-Mallouk. The Beavers chipped away at the lead, but the Sagehens rallied again with an 8-7 lead with five straight points, including a kill and block by Addo-Ashong. The Sagehens refused to relinquish the lead and later with a 22-19 lead, they scored three straight, including a kill by Izzy Deatherage to cap the set 25-19.
The second set proved to be more challenging as the Beavers looked to have found their rhythm on offense. Caltech jumped to a 5-1 lead early in the set, forcing the Sagehens to play catchup. A kill by Krystyna Maruszko and an assisted block by Maruszko and Dallas Taylor gave Caltech an 11-7 lead, but the Sagehens responded with a 4-1 run to stay within one point. Trailing 15-12, Pomona-Pitzer battled back with three points thanks to two errors by the Beavers and a service ace by Gaby Harrison. The Beavers took back the lead and was ahead 19-16, but the Sagehens answered back with four straight points to take their first lead of the set. Tied at 22, Chen-Mallouk came up clutch with back-to-back kills to put the Sagehens at set point. After a block by Caltech, Chen-Mallouk sealed the set with a kill off a pass by Tong.
Caltech claimed the third set after capitalizing on a hot start, leading 8-3 and never looking back. Sagehens rallied late with four unanswered points to cut the deficit 19-16, but the Beavers held on to win the third set.
Pomona-Pitzer shook off the loss and began the fourth set with dominance. They opened up with a 6-1 lead after four errors by Caltech. The Sagehens strung a huge run with a 10-6 lead, scoring 10 straight as the Beavers struggled to receive Jackie Roland's services. Roland scored two service aces during the run and seemingly sealed the match after a 20-6 lead. Addo-Ashong blocked a hit attempt by Sydney Richardson to finish the match 25-10.
