Men's Water Polo: Sam Sasaki Nets Twice In Whittier Loss

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo Team saw their 29-game SCIAC win streak come to it's end after a 9-3 loss to Whittier College on Wednesday night. The last time the Sagehens lost a regular season SCIAC contest came on September 20, 2017 when they fell to the Poets in overtime 7-6. Sam Sasaki led the Sagehens in scoring with two goals while Noah Sasaki had three steals. Adam Gross also scored a goal and contributed one steal.

Season Impact: The Sagehens are now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC.

The Poets opened up the scoring more than three minutes into the opening period with a goal by Dominick Nevarez on a power play. They managed to double their lead with 38 seconds left in the period as Nevarez found the net again.

Sam Sasaki fired a rocket from distance on a power play in the second period to cut the lead 2-1. However, the Poets responded with three goals to take a 5-1 lead at halftime.

Adam Gross scored the opening goal of the second half, finding the ball near the net and taking an open shot into the top right corner, cutting the lead 5-2. With 1:45 remaining, the Poets responded with two goals by Eric Borunda to extend the lead 7-2. With 30 seconds left in the third period, Sam Sasaki scored from distance again to cut the deficit to four.

The Poets netted two more in the final period to hold on for the win.

Up Next: The Sagehens will travel to UCLA for the MPSF Invitational on September 27 to 29th. They will face UCLA in the first day on the 27th at 2:00 p.m.
