Football: Sagehens Shut Out Lewis & Clark, 20-0

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. --  The Pomona-Pitzer Football team shut out Lewis & Clark in their home opener 20-0 on Saturday afternoon at Merritt Field.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens move to 2-0 on the year.

Senior Karter Odermann led the air raid against the Pioneers as he went 30-49 with 291 yards passing and a touchdown. Sophomore Dominick Norris led the rushing attack with 69 yards off of 15 carries with a 4.6 average per carry.  Junior Win Hunter eclipsed 100 receiving yards in the game leading the way with 119 off of eight catches and found the endzone once in the win.

The Sagehen defense was hard to crack as they only allowed 168 yards of total offense for Lewis & Clark along with one interception and three sacks. Sophomore Adam Webber came away with the interception for the Sagehens while senior Josh Portnoy, junior Kyle Davis and sophomore Nicholas DelBiaggio all came away with sacks on the defensive line.

Pomona-Pitzer had their offense working in the first quarter but stalled out on downs on their first possession in Pioneer territory.  After forcing Lewis & Clark to punt on its first two possessions, Odermann and Hunter linked up for a 43-yard strike to take a 7-0 lead.

After forcing the Pioneers to punt on their next possession, the Sagehens pieced together a five-play, 87-yard drive capped off by an Odermann 12-yard run to extend the lead to 14-0 after the first quarter.

The second quarter was all defense as both teams punted on every possession of the quarter except the final drive of the half where the Sagehens marched 55 yards and senior Winston Li hit a field goal to send the Sagehens into halftime with a 17-0 lead.

The third quarter started with back-to-back interceptions by both teams on consecutive drives.  After the interception for the Sagehens, Pomona-Pitzer added more points to its total after Li connected with another field goal to push the lead to 20-0.

After going up by 20, Odermann and Norris began to chip away at the clock with the ground attack.  With Lewis & Clark having no luck against a strong Pomona-Pitzer defense, the Sagehens were able to run out the clock in the fourth and come away with the 20-0 win at home.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to George Fox on Saturday, September 21st at 7:00 p.m.
