Women's Soccer: Sagehens Net 4 In Opening Night Win Over UC Santa Cruz

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team opened the 2019 season on a high note as they netted four goals in a 4-0 win over non-conference opponent UC Santa Cruz on Saturday evening at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

The Sagehens had four different players open the season with goals as seniors Bria VarnBuhler and Lily Gane found the back of the net as well as sophomore Helena Robinowitz and first-year Hannah Mandell. Senior Isa Berardo and sophpmore Lindsey Uteda combined for a shutout with each of them registering 45 minutes inside of goal and Berado getting the win with the start.

The Sagehens dominated possession from start to finish against the Banana Slugs as Pomona-Pitzer outshot UCSC 20-2 with just one shot on goal.

The Sagehens struck for their first goal of the night after a corner from senior Brianna Lau bounced around inside the box with Gane able to put a shot on goal that deflected to VarnBuhler who turned and put the ball past the line to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

The Sagehens came back for their second goal of the first half after Robinowitz nearly scored off of cross from junior Chloe Hamer but sophomore Brooke Bordonaro was able to settle the ball and put in a low cross to Robinowitz who blasted it past the keeper to double the Sagehens lead at 2-0 in the 34th minute.

After scoring two goals already, the Sagehens added a third before halftime as first-year Sophie Staeger played a beautiful through ball from the midfield that Mandell was able to control and touch past the keeper to hit the open net to give the Sagehens a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Sagehens added one more goal in the second half as Gane capped off the night with a goal inside the box to extend the lead to 4-0 and put an exclamation point on a stellar opening night for the Pomona-Pitzer soccer team.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next host non-conference opponent No. 20 MIT on Sunday, September 1st at 11:00 a.m.
