Women's Volleyball: Asato Earns 500th Season Dig In Final Season Game

ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball Team dropped their final regular season contest on Saturday night, falling to Chapman University on the road 3-0 (14-25, 21-25, 18-25). Senior Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong led the team with nine kills and concludes her Sagehen career with 777 kills while her classmate Isabel Kelly added two kills and four block assists, ending her career with 204 total blocks. Lauren Asato surpassed the 500 digs milestone, reaching for 11 digs and finishing her debut season with 504 digs.

Season Impact: The Sagehens conclude their season with a 12-13 record overall and 6-9 record in the SCIAC.

Chapman opened up with a 6-2 lead in the first set, but Grace Fan and Chloe Kerstein hit back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to two. The Sagehens continually battled to get past the two-point gap, but while trailing 15-13, the Panthers jumped to an 8-0 run to lead 23-13. The Panthers closed out the set comfortably.

The Panthers maintained their momentum in the second set, jumping to a 10-3 lead. However, the Sagehens battled back, scoring off two errors from the Panthers followed by a combined block from Addo-Ashong and Adrienne Tong. Addo-Ashong followed with a kill to cut the deficit 10-7. The Panthers rallied back to a 15-11 lead, but a kill by Naomi Chen-Mallouk and Kelly cut the deficit to two. Chapman responded with four unanswered points and continued to hold the lead. After Chapman extended the lead 24-17, the Sagehens mustered a huge rally by scoring four straight points thanks to two kills by Chen-Mallouk, a combined block by Kelly and Zaza Apolinario-Chaplin, and a service ace from Adrienne Tong. However, the Panthers closed the set after a kill by Sophie Srivastava.

Chapman led 8-4 early in the first set and later rallied for six straight points to extend the lead 16-7. The Sagehens battled back, scoring two straight points off a kill by Apolinario-Chaplin and Gaby Harrison to cut the deficit 19-10. While trailing 23-12, the Sagehens scored two more off a kill by Izzy Deatherage and an error by Chapman. Pomona-Pitzer later rallied with four consecutive points, but a block by Chapman sealed the match.
