Women's Volleyball: Sagehens Emerge Victorious in Five Sets Against Bulldogs

REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball Team battled to a hard-earned road victory against University of Redlands on Friday night, grinding to a 5-set win (25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-11). Naomi Chen-Mallouk led the Sagehens with 17 kills while Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong had 12 kills with three solo blocks and two assist blocks. Adrienne Tong had 46 assists and 17 digs, and Alexis Rudy had a season-high five assited blocks with a solo block and eight kills.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 9-7 record overall and 3-3 in the SCIAC.

Redlands got off to a hot start, taking a 5-0 lead early in the set, but the Sagehens refused to back down. Trailing 21-14, the Sagehens rallied back with eight straight points thanks to two service aces by Jackie Roland and three attack errors by the Bulldogs. Addo-Ashong capped the rally with a kill on a free ball to give the Sagehens a 22-21 lead. Tied at 22, the Sagehens closed the set with three straight points, capped by a service ace from Chloe Kerstein.

The Bulldogs responded in the second set when a 5-0 run after leading 15-14 helped them pull away with a 25-19 set win. The Sagehens opened the third set with a huge run, taking a 5-1 lead to start it off. Later with a 7-4 lead, the Sagehens went on a 7-0 run, during which Addo-Ashong landed two kills. With a 23-19 lead, the Sagehens got their 24th point off a kill by Addo-Ashong. The Bulldogs tried to rally back, coming within one to cut the deficit 24-23, but an attack error by Redlands gave the Sagehens the third set.

Redlands battled to take a 23-17 lead in the fourth set, but the Sagehens refused to go away, going on a 4-1 run to cut into the deficit. However, a kill by Sofia Olsson of Redlands sealed the set 25-21.

In the final set, the two sides battled neck-to-neck. While trailing 10-9, the Sagehens found their spark when Chen-Mallouk ignited a 5-0 run with a huge kill. Isabel Kelly followed with a kill, and Chen-Mallouk and Rudy combined for a block to make it 12-10. An attack error by Redlands and a solo block from Kelly gave the Sagehens 14-10 lead. Rudy sealed the match with a solo block.

Up Next: The Sagehens will travel to University of La Verne on Tuesday, October 8 to take on the Leopards at 7:00 p.m.
