Women's Soccer: VarnBuhler's Brace Leads No. 9 Sagehens Past Poets, 4-0

Box Score

WHITTIER, CA. --  The No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier College 4-0 on Wednesday night at Memorial Stadium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 14-1-2 overall and 10-1 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by senior Bria VarnBuhler who notched her second brace of the season and currently leads the SCIAC in goals with 14. First-years Charlotte Tapp and Hannah Mandell also worked their way onto the score sheet as Tapp netted her third goal of the year while Mandell moves into a tie for second in the SCIAC in goals with nine. The Sagehen defense notched their 12th shutout this season while senior Isa Berardo earned their fourth shutout with two saves.

Pomona-Pitzer outshot the Poets 22-3 throughout the game and 13-3 in the first half.  The Sagehens put seven of those 13 shots on goal but despite peppering the Whittier cage with shots, the Sagehens could not find an opening goal in the first half as the two teams went to halftime tied at 0-0.

The Whittier defense could only keep the Sagehens off the score sheet for so long as Pomona-Pitzer's offense exploded with four goals in the second half.

Tapp got the scoring going just over two minutes into the second half with a shot left to the left side of the goal off of an assist from junior Chloe Hamer to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.  Mandell followed up with a goal in the 52nd minute after she struck a volley to the right side of the goal to double up the Sagehens' lead at 2-0.

Pomona-Pitzer added two more goals to its total in the 54th and 62nd minute as VarnBuhler added to her conference leading goal total with a breakaway goal off of an assist from first-year Taylor Venenciano for the first and a first-time volley off of a cross from Tapp to complete her brace and capped off four goals in 15 minutes as the Sagehens road their big second half to a 4-0 victory.

Up Next: The Sagehens will finish off the regular season as they travel to Caltech on Saturday. November 2nd at 11:00 a.m.
