Women's Volleyball: Pomona-Pitzer Defeats Bulldogs in Five Sets

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Volleyball Team prevailed in a five-set thriller on Tuesday night with a 3-2 victory against University of Redlands (17-25, 25-18, 17-25, 27-25, 15-12). Noami Chen-Mallouk led the team with 15 kills and two service aces while Lauren Asato had 21 digs. Seniors Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong and Isabel Kelly combined for 21 kills and three block assists.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to an 11-10 record overall and 5-6 in the SCIAC.

After dropping the first set 25-17, the Sagehens came back in the second set with a vengeance. Trailing 4-3, the home side rallied for five straight points, capped by a huge block assist by Addo-Ashong and Adrienne Tong. The Sagehens went on another run with an 11-9 lead, scoring five straight again as Chen-Mallouk served an ace and had a kill. The Sagehens never looked back as they scored their final two points off a kill by Chen-Mallouk and an attack error by Redlands.

The Bulldogs responded in the third set with a 25-17 win, leaving the Sagehens with their backs against the wall. In the fourth set, Pomona-Pitzer found their groove, opening the set with four straight points. Later, the Bulldogs responded with four straight points to take a 9-8 lead. Pomona-Pitzer regained momentum with a 17-16 lead when a booming kill by Gaby Harrison sparked a 4-0 run. Redlands tried to claw their way back and the two sides ended up tied at 24. Redlands took the advantage with a kill by Christina Casey, but the Sagehens refused to back down. After a kill by Gaby Harrison tied the set at 25, the Bulldogs committed two straight errors to give the Sagehens the match-tying set.

The Sagehens trailed early in the final set, as Redlands took a 5-2 lead, but Pomona-Pitzer rallied back thanks to four errors by the Bulldogs. Redlands tied it 7-7, but the Sagehens responded again after back-to-back kills by Kelly and Harrison followed by an error by the Bulldogs to lead 10-7. The Sagehens held on as a kill by Chen-Mallouk sealed the match 15-12.
