Women's Soccer: No. 8 Sagehens Notch 300th Program Win With 7-0 Win Over Caltech

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team notched their 300th program win with a 7-0 victory over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech on Saturday morning at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 11-0-1 on the year and 7-0 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens tallied seven total goals, which matched their season high as a team. The Sagehens were led by senior Bria VarnBuhler who scored a brace with two goals on the day. Sophomore Anna Ponzio, sophomore Helena Robinowitz and first-years Hannah Mandell, Charlotte Tapp and Sophie Staeger all found the back of the net while Staeger scored her first career collegiate goal.  Sophomore Lindsey Uteda got the win in goal, her second of the year, while stopping two shots for the shutout.

The Sagehens cruised to their 300th win in program history as they dominated play against the Beavers with 35 shots, 21 shots on goal and 10 corners in the game.  Pomona-Pitzer got the scoring going early as Ponzio took a cross by VarnBuhler and settled it with a shot past the keeper to go up 1-0 in the 8th minute. VarnBuhler followed up with back-to-back goals in the 20th and 23rd minute to extend the lead to 3-0 and Tapp ended the first half with a stunner after she turned and fired from well outside the box and nailed the back of the net to give the Sagehens a 4-0 lead at halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer picked up right where they left off as Robinowitz got on the scoreboard in the 54th minute after a screamer right at the keeper deflected off of her hands and into the goal to put the Sagehens up 5-0 in the 54th minute.

Mandell continued her solid play off of the bench as the substitute found the back of the net again off of a low cross from senior Brianna Lau to give the Sagehens a 6-0 lead and a pair of Sagehens earned their first collegiate points after sophomore Emily Piette assisted Staeger who scored off of a first-time curling ball near post to cap off the seven-goal game for the Sagehens for win No. 300.

Up Next: The Sagehens will travel to Thousand Oaks to take on Wednesday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m.
