Box Score PASADENA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer Team came through with a clinical 2-0 victory over Caltech in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday evening thanks to goals from Matthew Carlson and Peter Heckendorn. The Sagehens dominated possession, outshooting the Beavers 21 to 9 and goalkeeper Bryan Diangson collected six saves for his shutout.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 2-1 record overall and collected their first win in SCIAC play. The Beavers are 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer looked to find the opening goal in the 21st minute when Bjorn Sigurdsson found Jared Mejia on a corner kick. Mejia leapt for the header, but saw his attempt saved by Caltech's goalie Joe Como. Eamon Stein tried a shot in the 33rd minute for the Hens, but his attempt was stopped by Como as well.
After a scoreless first half, the Sagehens pounced early after halftime when Jared Mejia found Carlson for the opening goal just two and a half minutes into the second half.
Later in the 66th minute, Taylor Reifort delivered a cross to Heckendorn on a corner kick and Heckendorn connected in the box to double the lead.
Panic ensued in the 87th minute when the Sagehens committed a foul in their own box, giving the Beavers a chance to cut the lead in half. Kevin Yu of Caltech took the penalty shot, but saw his attempt saved by Diangson as the Sagehens preserved the shutout.
