Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – Three different Sagehens found the back of the net as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Chapman 4-2 on Saturday morning at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer field.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play.
The Sagehens had three different goal scorers in junior Megan Kuo, sophomore Chloe Hamer and junior Lily Gane. Junior Isa Berardo entered the game with the third lowest goals against average among Division III keepers and kept a clean sheet while they were in the game as Berardo went 67 minutes without surrendering a goal with three saves for their eighth win of the season.
The Panthers did something no team has done up to this point in the season against the Sagehens as they scored more than one goal against the Pomona-Pitzer defense.
The Sagehens controlled the game in the first half but the Panthers were staying strong on defense as they were able to hold off the Sagehens early on. Pomona-Pitzer landed its first goal of the game with a little help from the Panthers as a ball played into the box by freshman Anna Ponzio was struck by a Chapman defender and snuck past the goal line for an own goal to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens struck again right out of halftime as Megan Kuo converted a penalty kick from the spot to double up the Sagehens' lead at 2-0 in the 49th minute.
Pomona-Pitzer kept the offense going as they struck again 10 minutes later with Hamer curling a ball from outside the box past the keeper to extend the lead to 3-0.
The final goal of the game for Pomona-Pitzer came in the 63rd minute as Ponzio beat a defender and played a ball through the defense that found the foot of Gane just in front of goal to push the lead to 4-0.
After going down by four, the Panthers started finding their rhythm on offense. Chapman was able to win a ball deep in the Sagehens zone and a low cross found the foot of Lily Moore to get the Panthers on the board and cut the lead down to 4-1. Chapman cut the lead down to two on their very next offensive possession as they scored again off of a shot from Shelby Brown to cut the lead to just 4-2 in the 78th minute.
Chapman tried to get more scoring opportunities late in the game, but the Sagehens stayed strong on defense and held off the Panthers for their eighth win of the season.
