Football: Sagehens Roll Poets In 42-17 Win

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team got back on track with a 42-17 win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier College on Saturday night at Merritt Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by junior quarterback Karter Odermann who went 11-14 with 91 yards through the air and rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Dominick Norris led the way in the backfield with 110 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Nick Kapule led the receivers with 74 yards on nine catches.

The defense showed up for the Sagehens against the Poets in tonight's game. Senior William Nahm led the way with 10 total tackles and half of a sack while junior Josh Portnoy chipped in with nine tackles and also half a sack. The secondary continued its impressive performance as senior Elan Harris continued to be a ballhawk in the Sagehens' defense as he came away with yet another interception to lead the SCIAC with five on the year.

Neither team had much luck on offense in the first quarter as we saw punts on the first seven possessions of the game. The Sagehens finally broke the punt streak with Odermann punching in the first score of the game from five yards out to put the Sagehens up 7-0.

The Sagehens added to their lead with a score on their next possession as they took advantage of some good field possession after a good return from sophomore Tate Tussing to set up Norris for a nine-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-0.

Pomona-Pitzer added one more score before halftime after Harris's interception gave the Sagehens the ball back with great field position. Odermann cashed in on his second rushing touchdown of the day to push the lead to 21-0.

Whittie tacked on a field goal as time expired in the first half to cut the lead down to 21-3 heading into the locker room.

The Sagehens wasted no time getting on the board in the second half as the first play from scrimmage saw Norris busting a 55-yard rush through the heart of the Poets' defense to go up 28-3.

Pomona-Pitzer added two more touchdowns for good measure in the second half as senior Joseph Ha punched in an eight-yard touchdown and freshman Tristan Noble found the endzone on a one-yard rush as the Sagehens got back to their winning ways at home over Whittier.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to SCIAC opponent Chapman on Saturday, October 27th at 7:00 p.m.
