Box Score 2 THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Stephanie Sun and Julia Zwaal were dominant, and the Sagehens opened up day two of the Posada Royale Invitational with a big five set win over UC Santa Cruz.
Pomona-Pitzer dropped their final match to Wisconsin-Whitewater 3-1.
Season Impact: The Sagehens stand at 4-4 on the season heading into their SCIAC opener against Caltech.
Match 1: Pomona-Pitzer 3, UC Santa Cruz 2
Pomona-Pitzer began day two of the tournament with a close win over the Banana Slugs 24-26, 25-14, 17-25, 25-22, 15-7.
Sun was all over the court, making plays offensively and defensively. The 2015 All-SCIAC player finished with 13 digs and 10 kills and also tallied an assist and a block.
Zwaal had another standout performance leading the Sagehens with 16 kills and 22 digs.
Freshman Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong had a big game for Pomona-Pitzer, leading the team with five total blocks and nine kills. Addo-Ashong had 14 blocks in last weekend's Pacific Coast Classic.
Isabel Kelly made an impact defensively as well with three blocks and seven digs to go with nine kills. Jessica Finn added 20 digs of her own and 31 assists.
Jackie Roland dished out 16 assists.
Match 2: Wisconsin-Whitewater 3, Pomona-Pitzer
Zwaal put down 14 kills and 21 digs and Sophie Janssen had a team-high 24 digs and a service ace.
But it wasn't enough to get past the Warhawks as the Sagehens dropped the match 19-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-19.
Next Game: The Sagehens open up SCIAC play next Saturday, Sep. 17 win a 4 p.m. match against Caltech. Pomona-Pitzer beat the Beavers 3-0 in both of their meetings last season.
