Women's Soccer: No. 18 Sagehens Advance To Sweet 16 After 6-0 Win Over CMS

Box Score

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 18 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after a dominant 6-0 performance over rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Round Two on Sunday Afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.

It has been a season of records for the Sagehens this year and they added one more to their total by advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history by defeating CMS for the third time this season.

Pomona-Pitzer (16-1-3, 12-0-3) had an incredible offensive performance as a team as six different players scored a goal in the win over the Athenas.

Senior Danika Bethune started out the scoring early for the Sagehens as she weaved around the CMS defense and found the back of the net in the eighth minute to give Pomona-Pitzer an early 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens went on to score two goals less than a minute apart as senior Agueda Dudley-Berrios flicked in a lob off of a cross by junior Abby Onderwyzer Gold and sophomore Sara Sherburne scored off of a pass from freshman Brianna Lau to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 29th minute.

Pomona-Pitzer came out of halftime and added two more goals to its total within the first 11 minutes of the second half as senior Alyssa Kim scored from close range off of a pass from Bethune in the 50th minute and junior Natasha Thornton-Clark set up Onderwyzer Gold for a goal in the 56th minute to give the Sagehens a commanding 5-0 lead.

Sophomore Peri Cuppens added the final goal of the day for the Sagehens in the 80th minute as she settled a ball in from the backline and put it past the CMS goal keeper to match a season-high for goals in a game for Pomona-Pitzer with six.

Senior goal keeper Corey Goelz posted her ninth shutout of the season as she tallied five saves in the win for the Sagehens.

Up Next: The Sagehens will face the winner of Wisconsin Whitewater and Loras College in a location to be determined.
