Volleyball: Janssen, Sagehens Sweep Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Sophie Janssen had a game-high 20 digs and the Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team rolled on their way to a 3-0 win against the Chapman Panthers Friday night. 

The Sagehens dominated from start to finish hitting .424 in the first set and finishing with a .323 hitting percentage. They gain much needed momentum heading into the Sixth Street Rivalry Game tomorrow night against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Season Impact: Pomona-Pitzer snaps a four-game skid and moves back into fourth place in the SCIAC. They improve to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

The Panthers drop to 9-9 overall and 4-5 in the SCIAC. They fall to sixth place in the conference. 

First Set: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Chapman 17

After falling behind 14-12 midway through the set, the Sagehens went on a 9-0 run to take a 21-14 lead on a kill from Julia Zwaal. Zwaal finished the match with 13 kills.

Janssen was clutch defensively, recording 11 of her 20 digs in the set. Janssen made a mark on the offensive side as well, finishing with six assists in the match. 

Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong gave the Sagehens the set win on a huge kill off a free ball from the Panthers. 

Second Set: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Chapman 19

It was almost an identical situation in the second set with Pomona-Pitzer falling behind 13-8 before storming back on a 12-1 run with key kills from Zwaal and Isabel Kelly.

Kelly was on fire, with the freshman putting down seven of her 13 kills in the set and hitting .435 in the match.

Third Set: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Chapman 11

The Sagehens defense was the story of final set with Pomona-Pitzer racking up eight block assists, led by Sarah Gamble's three. Gamble led the Sagehens with five blocks in the match.

The set was never in question with the Sagehens jumping out to a 14-4 lead, helped by back-to-back kills from Stephanie Sun on assists from Janssen and Jackie Roland. Sun totalled seven kills in the match and Roland had 10 assists. 

Kate Porter recorded two of her five kills in the set. 

Kelly, Addo-Ashong, Porter, and Sun each had two kills in the game. Finn had 24 assists in the match.

Next Match: The Sagehens look to spoil the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas' perfect record tomorrow night. The game is set for 4 p.m. at Voelkel Gymnasium.
