Box Score Claremont, Calif. – Freshman Brianna Lau notched her first collegiate multi-goal game as the Sagehens shutout Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Pomona-Pitzer improves to 7-1-2 overall and 5-0-2 in SCIAC play while La Verne drops to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play this season.
Senior Corey Goelz recorded her second-straight shutout of the year while the Sagehens have now posted six shutouts as a team and has yet to surrender a goal at home.
The Sagehens jumped out to a lead in the 21st minute as Lau scored her first goal of the game as she lofted a ball over the head of the La Verne goal keeper off of a pass from junior Abby Onderwyzer Gold to take a 1-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer tacked on one more goal just before halftime in the 42nd minute as freshman Bria VarnBuhler found the back of the net off of a pass from junior Natasha Thornton-Clark to extend the lead to 2-0.
Lau tallied her second goal of the match as she settled a rebound off of the La Verne goal keeper and kicked it in for the Sagehens' lone goal of the half.
Up Next: The Sagehens will face off against SCIAC rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a Sixth Street Rivalry that will determine first place in the SCIAC standings. The match will be on Saturday, October 8th at the South Athletics Complex (on top of parking structure) at 7:00 p.m.
