CLAREMONT, Calif. – Julia Zwaal had 12 kills and the Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team beat the Occidental College Tigers in straight sets Tuesday night.

With the win, the Sagehens clinch the fourth and final spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. With two regular season games remaining, the Sagehens improve to 13-10 overall and 8-6 in SCIAC play.

They are followed by Chapman who currently sit at 7-8 in the conference with one game remaining, but the Sagehens own all tiebreakers with the Panthers.

"Its great that we clinched," said Head Coach Valerie Townsend. "This has been one of our goals all season so I'm very happy to see us take this step." 

The Tigers drop to 9-14 and 5-9 in the SCIAC.

The Tigers played Pomona-Pitzer close with neither team take more than a five point lead through the first two sets.

The Sagehens started off the game hot, hitting .306 in the first set with just three errors.

"I think we've improved a lot from the beginning of the season," said Townsend. "Tonight everyone contributed and that will be key for us moving forward in conference play."

The team contribution showed on the stat sheet with Isabel Kelly turning in nine kills, Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong and Sarah Gamble each totalling seven, and senior Stephanie Sun putting down six.

Jessica Finn spread the ball around accounting for 39 of the Sagehens 41 assists and dug 10 balls. Sophomore libero Sophie Janssen had a game-high 14 digs and pitched in two assists. 

Zwaal added nine digs of her own and had three service aces.

"The girls played very well," said Townsend. "The goal for us has been to reduce errors and take care of business on the court."

The Sagehens are 5-1 so far in the second round of SCIAC play, only falling to No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
