Box Score San Antonio, Texas - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team gave sixth-ranked Trinity (Texas) a tough battle on the road, but came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision on Friday evening.
Trinity, which finished 22-1-1 last year, improves to 2-0 on the young season with the win, while Pomona-Pitzer sees its record level at 1-1 after opening the year with a 3-2 win over The Master's College on Tuesday.
Senior goalie Annie Wedel (pictured) had five saves in the second half without allowing a goal for the Sagehens, while sophomore midfielder Abby Onderwyzer Gold had a team-high two shots, one of which was saved.
Hannah Hummel scored what would be the game's only goal at the 12:23 mark of the first half off of assists from Brigitte Taylor and Jordan Leeper, converting after Taylor's initial attempt hit off the crossbar. Onderwyzer Gold had a bid for an equalizer in the 25th minute, but her shot was saved by Trinity goalie Dana McLaughlin.
Junior goalie Corey Goelz helped keep the Sagehens in it when she saved a penalty kick late in the first half to keep the deficit 1-0. Pomona-Pitzer's had an early chance at a tying goal in the second half, but Sabrina Wilk missed high off a corner kick taken by Lindsay Mooradian. The Trinity defense buckled down from there and held the Sagehens without a shot attempt the rest of the way.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action at Trinity on Sunday for a non-conference game against Hardin-Simmons.
