Box Score CLAREMONT, CA: Pomona-Pitzer snapped a five-match skid with a dominating 3-0 sweep of Caltech on the back of a balanced offensive attack from the Sagehens.
Back in the friendly confines of Voelkel Gymnasium after spending last weekend on the East Coast at the Carnegie Mellon Doubletree Invitiational, the Sagehens (7-6, 3-2 SCIAC) capitalized on timely Beaver errors to string together big runs that keyed 25-13, 25-12, and 25-14 set wins. While Pomona-Pitzer firmly controlled both the score and momentum of the first two sets, Caltech (0-10, 0-5) opened the third with a 5-2 lead before a 6-1 run put the Sagehens ahead for good en route to securing their first sweep in SCIAC play.
Junior Stephanie Sun led the way for Pomona-Pitzer on the offensive end collecting a game high 13 kills to go with four digs and a service ace. Junior Jessica Finn (pictured) provided great versatility for both the offense and defense, compiling a game high 36 assists and team high nine digs to keep everything flowing for the Sagehens. Junior Sarah Gamble and Freshman Sophie Janssen were the other big performers for Pomona-Pitzer with Gamble totaling seven kills and three service aces while Janssen compiled eight kills and one assist.
"Tonight's focus was to reduce errors and we did a pretty decent job of that" said Head Coach Valerie Townsend. "I thought we served well and did reduce our errors on the final two sets and finished strong. With us now entering the heart of the SCIAC schedule, we will need to play a lot stronger and more consistent in our matches this weekend in order to get to where we want to be."
Pomona-Pitzer will return to the court on Friday as they'll take the trip down Bonita Ave. to square off against La Verne in a 7:30pm SCIAC contest. They'll then return to Voelkel Gymnasium on Saturday for a non-conference matchup against Austin College at 1pm. All coverage for this weekend's slate can be found on the Volleyball Schedule page.
