Box Score 2 PITTSBURGH, PA: Pomona-Pitzer rounded out its CMU Doubletree Invitational slate with two tough losses on Saturday, dropping matches to 16th-ranked Carnegie Mellon 0-3 and John Carroll 1-3 at Skibo Gymnasium.
Saturday's matinee game saw the Sagehens match up with their second AVCA ranked team of the week in host Carnegie Mellon. The Tartans (17-2, 0-0 UAA) claimed a hard-fought first set 25-20 and never looked back as they powered their way to 25-19 and 25-16 wins in the final two sets to get their 17th victory of the season. Sophomore Kate Porter led the Pomona-Pitzer (6-5, 2-2 SCIAC) offensive attack tying a season high with nine kills to go with two digs. Freshman Julia Zwaal and Junior Stephanie Sun (pictured) aided Porter at the net with six and five kills respectively while Sophomore Jessica Finn provided 19 assists and 13 assists for the Sagehens. Senior Michelle Schultz continued a strong start to the season, posting 22 digs, two assists, and one service ace.
The nightcap saw Pomona-Pitzer take the first set from John Carroll 25-18 before the Blue Streaks (8-9, 0-0 OAC) won the last three 25-18, 25-18, and 25-23 to finish an undefeated slate at the CMU DoubleTree Invitational. Stephanie Sun posted a career high 20 kills to lead the Sagehen (6-6, 2-2 SCIAC) offense while Julia Zwaal added 16 kills of her own. Jessica Finn kept the offense moving with 40 assists while Michelle Schultz posted a season high 39 digs to anchor the defense.
Pomona-Pitzer will return to SCIAC action this Tuesday with a 7:30p.m. match versus Caltech in Voelkel Gymnasium. Live stats and Video for the match can be found on the Pomona-Pitzer Athletics Website.
