Box Score CLAREMONT, CA: Pomona-Pitzer opened up the second half with two goals in the first 20 minutes and never looked back en route to a 4-2 victory over Occidental in Saturday SCIAC action.
With temperatures well into the mid 90's throughout the entire match, the Sagehens (4-4-1, 2-2 SCIAC) had to outlast both the heat and waves of attacks from Tigers to hold for their second SCIAC win of the season. While Occidental (2-5-1, 1-3 SCIAC) netted the first goal only five minutes into the match, Pomona-Pitzer responded with 3 unanswered goals of their own, ultimately building a 4-1 lead before a late Tigers goal cut it to the match's final score of 4-2.
Junior Alyssa Kim played an integral role in the second half offensive explosion for the Sagehens, assisting on Sophomore Sofia Barcher's game-winning goal in the 58th minute while adding a goal in the 64th minute to put the Sagehens up 3-1. Sophomore Abby Onderwyzer Gold (pictured) had a big day on the offensive end as well, putting in the deflection off Junior Danika Bethune's shot in the 18th minute to go with an assist on Kim's 64th minute goal. Senior Natalie Barbaresi was the last Sagehen to score points on the day, netting her first career assist on Barcher's goal.
"That win was an important one for us to show that Wednesday wasn't a fluke" said Head Coach Jennifer Scanlon. "Today wasn't pretty, so I'm proud of us going down early and regrouping and figuring it out on the field how to get the momentum back in our favor and then care of it to the end. I think it was a good result for us and something to build on for this upcoming week."
Pomona-Pitzer will return to action on Wednesday in a SCIAC matchup at La Verne scheduled for 7 pm. They'll then return to the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Stadium on Saturday for a 4 pm math versus Cal Lutheran. Video for the La Verne match can be found here.
