Box Score Redlands, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team dominated the pivotal third set 25-14 and went on to take a 3-1 win over Redlands on Tuesday evening in its SCIAC opener.
Junior Stephanie Sun (pictured) had 18 kills to lead the way for the Sagehens, who improve to a perfect 5-0 on the season with the win, including 1-0 in league play. Set scores were 25-20, 21-25, 25-14, 25-18.
After splitting the first two sets, Pomona-Pitzer dominated the third, using a 12-3 run to a 21-9 lead and coasting to the 25-14 win. Redlands tried to bounce back in the fourth, taking a 3-0 lead, but the Sagehens got those three points back and gradually pulled away for the 25-18 win to clinch the 3-1 victory.
Freshman Julia Zwaal had 14 kills, 14 digs and eight service aces to support Sun's solid performance. Senior libero Michelle Schultz had 23 digs to pace the defense, while sophomore setter Jessica Finn had 33 assists.
"We really started off rusty and struggled to get into a groove," said Head Coach Valerie Townsend. "I do believe the humidity in the gym played a factor, making playing for both teams a challenge. The third set the Hens came alive and really got our game together. That set was important and set the tone for us to finish it off. Opening SCIAC with a win is a confidence builder and something we will use to strengthen our game."
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action this weekend for road SCIAC matches at Chapman on Friday at 7:30 and at Occidental on Saturday at 6 p.m.
