Big Second Half Helps Sagehens Soar Past Leopards 3-1 for Senior Day Win

Box Score

CLAREMONT, CA:  Pomona-Pitzer used two early second half goals to take down La Verne 3-1 and snap a three game losing streak in the Sagehens' regular season home finale.

Knotted up at 1-1 through a tight first 45 minutes of action, Pomona-Pitzer (9-7, 7-5 SCIAC) wasted no time establishing a tenacious offensive attack after halftime, netting two goals in the first twenty minutes to give the Sagehens all the breathing room necessary in a 3-1 victory to bring Senior Day to a happy close. The Sagehens would open up the match's scoring in the 22nd minute as an Alyssa Kim pass freed Danika Bethune to score her team-leading ninth goal of the season. La Verne (6-8-2, 4-7-1 SCIAC) would respond only eight minutes later with a putback resulting from a mad scramble off a corner to draw the match even at one. While the Sagehens would create some quality stretches, the game winner wouldn't come until the 55th minute when a Leopard handball inside the box led to Katie Tao burying a penalty kick to make it 2-1.

The highlight of the match came courtesy of Senior Nicola Ying Fry (pictured) in the 65th minute when she settled a long cross from Alyssa Kim off her chest and fired it past the Leopard Goalkeeper  for her third career goal and second of the season. Senior Annie Wedel picked up her 20th career win for the Sagehens, going the full 90 with two saves while Natalie Barbaresi, Taylor Fortson, and Nadia Alaiyan all added in solid performances on the defensive end.

"It's always a great thing to be able to get a win on Senior Day" said head coach Jen Scanlon. "However, this win was special one for us not only because it helped us move closer to clinching a SCIAC Tournament spot but also because all of our seniors played a key role in making it happen. The girls did an excellent job of competing hard today and playing with a lot of heart and emotion and this was exactly the type of match we needed to get us back to where we need to be for this week. All in all, I'm really proud of what we accomplished today and excited to see the seniors get the send –off they deserve."

With the victory, Pomona-Pitzer closes out its home SCIAC schedule with a record of 6-1 and 7-2 in all home contests, both of which are the highest marks in over eight seasons. Additionally, the 2016 Senior Class finishes with an overall home record of 22-11-3 while going 19-7-2 in home SCIAC matches (16-4-1 over the last three seasons). The Sagehens have also moved one step closer to securing their fifth consecutive trip to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament, staying in sole possession of 3rd place with 21 points, two points behind 2nd place CMS (23) and two ahead of 4th place Whittier (19).

Pomona-Pitzer will round out its regular season on the road as they head to Thousand Oaks on Wednesday to take on Cal Lutheran at 7pm before trekking down to Orange County on Saturday to take on Chapman in an 11am matinee game.
