Box Score Claremont, Calif. - First-year QB Edward Sias threw for 303 yards and 3 scores, but Pomona-Pitzer's football team fell to visiting Cal Lutheran, 47-27, Saturday afternoon on Merritt Field.
Pomona-Pitzer falls to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran moves to 4-1 and 2-1.
Cal Lutheran scored first to cap an 8-play 77-yard drive, but Pomona-Pitzer answered right back when Sias hit senior WR Brett Harper for an 18-yard score to complete an 11-play, 75-yard drive with 5:11 left in the first quarter. The Sagehens then took the lead, 14-7, early in the second quarter when Sias and Harper connected again on a 2-yard scoring pass--this time Harper throwing to Sias. But Cal Lutheran answered back with a field goal, two touchdowns, and an interception return to lead, 31-14, at halftime. In the third, Pomona-Pitzer drove 65 yards in ten plays, capped by a 4-yard Sias score to Jack Pietrykowski, to close to 31-21. But again Cal Lutheran answered with a scoring barrage: a passing touchdown, a safety, and a running touchdown to extend the Kingsmen's lead to 47-21 midway through the final quarter. A late 9-yard Sagehen scoring strike from Sias to Ryan Abele in the last minute closed the scoring.
Sias completed 22-40 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns, while Aseal Birir (pictured) rushed 18 times for 74 yards. Sias spread the catches around to Harper (5 receptions, 44 yards), Birir (5 receptions, 65 yards), Pietrykowski (5 receptions, 44 yards), while five other Sagehens also caught passes.
Pomona-Pitzer travels to Whittier (0-5, 0-3) Saturday, Oct. 24 for a 5:00pm late afternoon game.
