Women's Soccer Downs Whittier, 3-2, to Extend SCIAC Lead

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer's women's soccer team grabbed a 3-0 lead midway through the second half on its way to a 3-2 win over Whittier Saturday at home. With a sixth straight victory, the Sagehens extended the team's lead in the SCIAC standings. Pomona-Pitzer stands at 8-4 overall and 6-2 in SCIAC.

Alyssa Kim opened the scoring in the 27th minute following a series of passes from Danika Bethune and Natalie Barbaresi. Kim's point-blank shot quickly found the net, and the 1-0 lead held through halftime. In the second half, Katie Tao's bullet from 25 yards out in the 77th minute hit the upper right corner. Just a minute later, Peri Cuppens (pictured) booted home an assist from Kim to give Pomona-Pitzer a 3-0 lead. Two Whittier goals from Madison Shipherd narrowed the final margin.

Sagehen goalie Corey Goelz had five saves, while the shooting was fairly even between the two teams: Pomona-Pitzer had 13 shots on goal, while Whittier had 11.

Pomona-Pitzer hosts cross campus rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wednesday, Oct. 14 at home in a 4:30pm contest.
