Box Score 2 Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team swept its two matches on the first day of the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational, hosted by Cal Lutheran, defeating George Fox 3-0 and Willamette 3-1 on Friday.
With the wins, Pomona-Pitzer improves to 5-1 on the young season, with the only loss a five-setter to Whitworth when first-team All-American Allie Frappier did not play in the fifth set.
The Sagehens took the George Fox match relatively easily, albeit with a close second set, winning 25-18, 25-23, 25-14. Pomona-Pitzer then dropped the first set to Willamette 25-21, but roared back and won the second set 25-5. The final two sets were much closer, but the Sagehens prevailed in both 25-22 and 25-20 to take the match 3-1.
Frappier led the way in kills in both matches for the Sagehens, tallying 15 in the George Fox win and 20 in the win over Willamette. Freshman Kate Porter was second in kills against George Fox with nine, while senior Ellen Yamasaki and sophomore Kelli Derrah each had seven in the Willamette win. Freshman Jessica Finn had 40 assists on the day (23 against Willamette), while sophomore Elizabeth Sun had 37 (20 against George Fox).
Defensively, junior libero Michelle Schultz led in digs in both matches with 17 against George Fox and 22 in the Willamette victory, when she tied with Yamasaki. Senior Kirea Mazzolini had six blocks against George Fox and four (two solo) against Willamette. Senior Samantha Cahill added six blocks against Willamette and four against George Fox.
Pomona-Pitzer concludes play tomorrow when it takes on Dallas and Trinity (Texas) hoping to sweep four West Region opponents over the weekend.
